Westley makes Albrighton Captain

One of Graham Westley’s first big decisions in his return as Boro manager has been made today with new signing Mark Albrighton being named Stevenage Borough Captain. Albrighton succeeds Ashley Westwood who captained the side while Peter Taylor was in charge last season. Another former Boro Captain and a Westley signing in his last spell, Ronnie Henry was the favourite to be given the role. However, GW has decided to go with the experienced Albrighton who has won promotion from this league before as well as being vice-captain in the Cambridge team last season that got to the Blue Square Premier Play-Off Final.

In my opinion I think Albrighton will be a similar type of Captain to what Westley’s last Captain, Jason Goodliffe, was like. Goodliffe was a real leader, vocal on the pitch and someone the other players relied upon. Boro haven’t had that since his departure the season before last. Ronnie Henry wasn’t the greatest of Captain’s although he can say he was the first one to lift a Trophy at the New Wembley. Henry was never really vocal on the pitch and as he is still relatively inexperienced his team mates may not rely on him as much as someone who has been there and done it. Albrighton has and so should be a good appointment by Westley.

The club also had their “Open Day” at the Shephalbury training ground yesterday and was seen by many as a success. Fans got their chance to see the Boro players, including just a few new faces train before taking part in some activities with the players themselves. It’s good to see that there was a good turn out from the Boro supporters and lets hope the enthusiasm carries on until the 9th August and that trip up to Wrexham!
