Westwood leaves Broadhall Way

Ashley Westwood has left Stevenage by “mutual consent”. The writing was on the wall really when Westwood’s face was missing from the 2008/2009 squad photo, even though Peter Vincenti, who is also on the transfer list, is in the picture. Westwood was only at Boro for 7 months after joining the club on a free transfer from Chester City. He was one of Peter Taylor’s first signings in the January transfer window and was a regular starter in the 2nd half of the season.

I’m not disappointed Westwood has left the club as he was a very inconsistent player who was prone to giving away a penalty or two. He was also likely to have been one of the clubs higher earners and wouldn’t of had much playing time this coming season due to Mark Albrighton being brought in. Boro state he has left by “mutual consent”, which I assume means a financial settlement between the player and club has been agreed for Westwood to find somewhere else to play his football. I’m sure he will find another club, maybe even a club in this division, as he has a lot of experience at playing at a higher level.

Regarding the team photo that was released yesterday, I think the fact the club have already done the photo for this season suggests that maybe there won’t be any more arrivals this summer. Boro have got plenty of time left before the season starts to get a photo done and make sure the squad is full, but they have chose to get it done now. Maybe that new left back everyone wants to see won’t arrive and that Scott Laird will be the first choice come August 9th.
