Wednesday Round Up

Stevenage finished pre-season in style with a 7-1 victory over Slough Town. Lee Boylan hit 5 goals as he aims to push for a place in Saturday’s team at Wrexham. Other goals from Andy Drury and Calum Willock completed the rout. Again Westley used “squad” players for the game against non-league opposition and would of been pleased to see Boylan hit form. At the moment it looks likely that GW will go with Morison and either Cole or Thomas up front. I assume that Boylan will be on the bench though for the trip up to North Wales.

Some transfer news regarding some of the younger players at the club. Both Jack Bradshaw and Elliot Buchanan have moved on loan to Maidenhead and Boreham Wood respectively. Hendon apparently are interested in taking young striker George Brinkman as well as back-up keeper James Russell. This will surely mean that GW will sign either Drench who played last night at Slough or Michael Jordan who has featured frequently during pre-season. Also Luke Cole, Peter Vincenti and Scott Balderson are all speaking to Shaun Gale at Havant and Waterlooville about loan deals.

Elsewhere in the Conference, Cambridge have paid Rushden & Diamonds £15k for Jon Challinor. The ex Exeter attacking midfielder has left the Diamonds with spaces in their midfield at a premium. Challinor on his day is one of the best midfielders in the league, although recently hasn’t seemed to show what he can do often enough. The move certainly shows that Cambridge intend to push for promotion again this season. The departures in the summer may have rocked the ship, but Gary Brabin has come in and made some very astute signings. Anthony Tonkin is a good signing at left back, while Andy Parkinson could be a revelation in the Blue Square Premier this season.
