Boro 1-2 Wrexham

Boro 1-2 WrexhamBoro lost again at home today to Wrexham to make it 3 defeats in a row and just 1 point from the last 12 available, but it isn’t all bad. The team put in a better performance and could count themselves unlucky not to get at least a point from the game. Westley, who had criticised some of his players pre match, decided to give a debut to Mark Roberts who arrived on loan in midweek from Northwich and recall Anthony Thomas to the starting 11. Gary Mills was partnered in midfield by Peter Vincenti, who is beginning to make that central midfield position his own.

Wrexham, managed by former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Dean Saunders, looked distinctly average and lacked a cutting edge up front with the Welsh side opting to just play Jefferson Louis on his own in attack. Boro were the better side in the first half and should have took the lead when Anthony Thomas went clear, but his shot clipped the crossbar. Ashley Westwood couldn’t seem to handle Thomas’ pace and Boro didn’t exploit this weakness enough. Westwood was poor all game and should have been sent off for consistent fouling. Thank God he left last summer.

In the second half, Wrexham still didn’t look like getting into the game and it was Boro who were setting the tempo, but against the run of play a deflected cross found Louis who hammered in the opener. It was a good finish from the ex Boro striker, who then decided to celebrate in front of the Boro fans and management team. Roberts was the unlucky one who deflected the ball into Louis’ path, but gave a very solid debut. If Westley can now add a quick and strong defender to partner him then our defensive record should improve.

Eight minutes after Wrexham’s opener, Boro equalised which they didn’t look like doing for long periods. Without Morison, Boro don’t look threatening enough when attacking, but out of the blue, a Callum Willock effort found the net. This goal should have given the team a bit of confidence that they could then go and try to win the game, but instead Wrexham slowly began to come back into the game and Boro were reduced to half chances. One of which nearly found the net when a Peter Vincenti header nearly crept into the far corner.

With 10 minutes to go and Boro looking to try to force a winner, Wrexham counter attacked and a deflected shot from Mark Williams found the net. To be honest he was allowed far too much time around the box to get a shot on goal, but the deflection was hard luck on Boro. Westley threw on Boylan in the last 5 minutes, but all he could do was send a long shot high and wide. A disappointing result, but an improved performance, even if the football at times was terrible. What is worrying though is Westley can’t even do what he is good at and win playing hoofball!

Roberts, Parkes & St Aimie arrive on deadline day

Stevenage Borough have freshened up their squad on the loan deadline day which today finished at 5pm. 3 players have come in, but no one has left the club, that we know of. Joining Boro are centre half Mark Roberts from Northwich Victoria, Watford youngster Jordan Parkes and ex QPR and Barnet forward Kieron St Aimie. I assume that the latter two have impressed Westley enough this week after training with the club. Here is a little more information on our new signings.

Mark Roberts

Roberts joins Boro from fellow Blue Square Premier side Northwich Victoria, who first team coach Dino Maamria managed previously. Roberts was part of the backline which impressed in their recent 1-1 draw at Broadhall Way and began his career at Crewe Alexandra before spells at Halifax and Accrington Stanley. It was mentioned in the Northwich report that Roberts kept Morison quiet that game and along with Will Antwi looked very strong at the back.

Jordan Parkes

Born in Hemel Hempstead, Parkes is a full back who likes to get forward. I expect Graham Westley to use Parkes at right back as he doesn’t seem comfortable with playing either Eddie Anaclet or Lawrie Wilson there. He can also play at left back so his versatility could be quite useful. He has made a couple of first team appearances for Watford and spent a couple of loan spells in the football league at Brentford and Barnet.

Kieron St Aimie

Probably the most recognisable name to most Boro supporters. St Aimie started his career against QPR before moving to Barnet last season. He is a centre forward, but can also play a bit on either wing. He has struggled to hold down a place at Underhill and spent a month on loan at Grays earlier in the season, scoring 2 goals on his debut, funnily enough against Wrexham. A quote from a Barnet fan I know regarding St Aimie;

“Awful player. One of the worst I have seen in a Barnet shirt. He is fat, slow, just woeful. In our recent game against Notts County when we were 4 down he laughed and got sent home.”

These 3 are interesting signings, but I still don’t see what St Aimie is going to offer that Daryl McMahon wouldn’t. It’s obvious that the defence needed strengthening and Westley has done that with bringing in Roberts. I would like to see Will Antwi follow him to Broadhall Way in January. Parkes will offer cover at both right and left back, which are both positions that could be permanently strengthened in January, with GW not happy with either Anaclet or Laird. One other bit of news regarding Boro today is that Ashley Barnes who was on trial at Boro earlier in the week has joined another Boro, Eastbourne.

McMahon & Martin told to leave

Just when you think things couldn’t get much worse at Broadhall Way, they did this afternoon when it was discovered that Graham Westley has made both Daryl McMahon and John Martin available for transfer. I guess that’s the end of the attractive and entertaining football then, with the disposal of 2 of his best passers of the ball. Expect hoofball to be played until this plank has finally left our club!

It seems GW would rather keep Gary Mills, who has done little to impress me this season, in his midfield rather than the energetic Martin who had re-discovered his form earlier in the season. I’ve said before that I think our best midfield duo is Martin and Bostwick as Bostwick’s defensive nature allows Martin to go forward more and create. This was the midfield partnership we had earlier in the season when we had our good run of form after a dreadful start.

“I’ve got to start making decisions who I’m going to give shirts to in the long term really. Neither John nor Daryl are going to be happy sitting on the bench and it would be better for them if they could go and find some first team football elsewhere.”

I’m not surprised that Westley has made changes, but I am shocked by what them changes are. McMahon has been fairly consistent this season when he hasn’t been injured and although he may of been below par in the last few games, just about everyone else has as well. Both of these players are key components in a team that wants to pass and move and it seems like Westley wants to move away from that already.

As for replacements, it was reported earlier in the week that Boro are trialing 6 or 7 players from football league clubs. Two names have emerged, with Shane White and Ashley Barnes joining the club from Plymouth Argyle on trial. Both of these players are youngsters in the Pilgrims’ reserve squad, looking to push into the first team. It seems like Sturrock wants them to get experience elsewhere first before bringing them into the Argyle side. I don’t see the logic in replacing good, experienced players with youngsters at this time in the season. This is what Peter Taylor did last season and it didn’t work. In fact it led to Boro dropping outside of the play-offs by the end of the season and missing out on promotion. One thing is for sure and that this move will not make Westley any more popular with the BHW faithful.

Round-up of the week

Pirelli StadiumFirst of all sorry that this site has not been updated as much this week as I’ve been pretty busy. On to the football side of things and it hasn’t been a great week to be a Stevenage Borough supporter. The beginning of the week saw Dino Maamria return to the club as first team coach, replacing Steve Greaves. I’ll go into this more in the week. Tuesday night saw a 3-1 home defeat against part-timers Histon, who won at Broadhall Way for the first time in the league quite comfortably. Boro then visited Burton on Saturday looking to bounce back after picking up just 1 point from the last two home games, but again found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline. The most worrying thing from the last 3 games is that our opponents have looked better, stronger and like they want it more than us.

The performance against Histon was poor and the side from just outside Cambridge thoroughly deserved their victory. Graham Westley again chose to change the team radically after the 1-1 draw against Northwich. Out went MOTM Peter Vincenti and goalscorer from that game Andy Drury, with Luke Oliver coming back into the side as well as John Martin. Boro’s problem at the minute is continuity. Every game sees at least 3 or 4 changes in important positions and players don’t seem to know their jobs. Against Histon the midfield was Bostwick and Martin, while against Burton it was Mills and Vincenti with Bostwick at right back and Martin not even in the 16 along with McMahon and Albrighton. Even Steve Morison isn’t sure of his place after being dropped against Burton yesterday.

Histon did on Tuesday what Boro were doing well earlier in the season and scored early to give them the initiative. Stevenage actually did well to get back into the game with Morison scoring after finding himself clear, but just before half-time a lack of concentration allowed Histon to take the lead again. Boro didn’t turn up in the second half and hardly created anything before Gareth Gwillim hit a fine third to secure the part-timers the 3 points. Boro were booed off by certain sections of the BHW crowd and in all honesty they deserved it after a lacklustre display. Westley’s tactics had again been found wanting and this attractive football that was promised in May has now been totally forgotten about in November.

It seems that GW now needs to get results and is reverting to hoofball in order to get them, but it just isn’t working. Boro are woeful at the back and look dis-organised all over the pitch. Gary Mills is apparently being told to play in a holding position and to tidy things up in the middle of the park, but after his recent performances I don’t quite know what his role is. His passing is too erratic and he doesn’t seem to move around the pitch enough to intercept passes and break down moves.

Boro travelled to Staffordshire yesterday more in hope than expectation of 3 points and again more changes were made to the starting 11. Dropped were Mark Albrighton, Daryl McMahon, Steve Morison and John Martin, while Lawrie Wilson began his 3 match suspension after being sent off on Tuesday night. I don’t understand Westley’s logic for making these changes. How can a totally different side in two consecutive games be healthy. Vincenti dropped for Histon, but back in for Burton? What difference did GW think that change would make? His team selections are becoming a joke and after yesterday I expect another load of changes for Wrexham next Saturday, which if we aren’t careful could be another heavy defeat.

Burton, as expected were well organised and stronger than Boro. In all honesty Stevenage did well to make it to 31 minutes before the Brewers took the lead thanks to a Michael Simpson strike. Burton had already had a few chances to open the scoring with Shaun Harrad and Simpson again going close. A corner also had to be cleared off the line by Day after Mills failed to clear at the near post. Burton took a deserved lead into the break. Boro needed some creativity going forward. Mills was non existant in midfield and Vincenti wasn’t making an impact on the game, which he had been doing in recent games against Woking and Northwich. Tommy Black was also failing to get into the game and after half-time was replaced by Mitchell Cole. Boylan also came off for Steve Morison.

Within minutes of the two coming on, Burton doubled their lead with Simpson again getting on the end of a superb cross from Keith Gilroy. Gilroy had been a threat all game and Bostwick, who looks uncomfortable at right back, had a busy afternoon. Boro upped the tempo after the second goal went in and had a goal controversially disallowed. It looked as if a Peter Vincenti header had been diverted in by Aaron Webster, but the linesman decided there was an offside and ruled it out. Soon after that, Callum Willock turned his marker in the box and won a penalty. Morison stepped up, but blazed the ball over the bar which sums up his and the teams recent form. It’s becoming increasingly worrying that it looks like Boro rely too much on their topscorer. If Morison isn’t firing then Boro aren’t either.

At the moment it does look like it’s all doom and gloom at Broadhall Way and to be honest the last two performances have shown no promise in them at all. Westley is still tactically inept and doesn’t seem to have changed at all from his previous spell in charge. The attractive, passing game has gone out of the window and we are reverting to the long ball over the top for whoever plays that week to run onto. We need some consistency. We need our best eleven players playing over a course of 5/6 games. It’s possible, but I don’t think GW knows what his best eleven is? One week the Martin-Bostwick partnership is best, but then 7 days later it’s back to Bostwick at the back and Mills in the team. Next up for us is Wrexham at Broadhall Way next Saturday and we wil have to be at our best if we are to prevent a third defeat in a row against Dean Saunders’ side.

Tonight’s Reaction

I’m going to leave the report on tonight’s game until tomorrow so I don’t just blow off steam. All I will say is this.

Is this the ‘entertaining’ and ’attractive’ football that Phil Wallace wanted last May? Is Graham Westley delivering what he promised?

Northwich frustrate Boro

Stevenage’s winning run in the league came to an end yesterday afternoon after a hardworking Northwich side held Boro to a draw at Broadhall Way. It could have been very different, had the home side taken their chances, but poor finishing again cost Boro as they dropped another 2 points as they look to push into the play-offs. It’s another set back for Graham Westley’s side, who just can’t seem to get going this season.

Westley opted to recall Lee Boylan to the starting eleven after his recovery from an injured foot. Boylan partnered Morison up front with Mitchell Cole coming into the side in place of Daryl McMahon who was unfairly dropped in my opinion. I thought McMahon was one of the better players against Leicester and should have kept his place with Cole remaining on the bench. How Cole won player of the month for October is unbelievable. He’s a good player when he wants to be, I just wish he wanted to be every game. Yesterday, he just didn’t look interested in the slightest and should have been taken off at half-time.

Northwich were strong at the back and although they didn’t cause much of a threat up front, they took the lead in the 28th minute when a free-kick, which was wrongly given against Eddie Anaclet, was swung in and ended up in the back of Boro’s net via the head of Darryn Stamp. It was a poor goal to concede defensively and I think Chris Day should have done better.

The defence has to be strengthened in January if we are serious about winning promotion. Too many sloppy goals are being scored against us and we will never go up if we continue to defend in this manner. I would have liked to see us look at bringing in someone like Will Antwi, who Northwich signed on loan from Wycombe in the week. Antwi was Northwich’s number 30 yesterday and dominated Morison and Boylan along with the Vics’ number 5. He is a big, strong, athletic centre back and is someone I think we need at the back. Kayleigh Osbourne from Eastbourne is another centre half who I think would do a good job at BHW.

Boro wasted several chances in the first half and went into the interval 1-0 down. After the break Boro dominated possession and the game was mostly played in the visitor’s half. Vincenti was again working hard in the Boro midfield trying to win the ball back before getting into the box himself. I think Vincenti had done a superb job this season. He is the ideal squad member and I would be more than happy if he remained apart of the Boro squad for the forseeable future. The goal finally came from Andy Drury who cut in from the right and hit a curling shot which flew past the Northwich keeper.

That goal didn’t seem to push Boro on though and Westley tactics again came found wanting. While searching for a winner, Westley decided to bring off Steve Morison, Boro’s main goal threat and the Blue Square Premier top scorer and replace him with Luke Oliver.

Why?

Why would you do that?

If he was going to take anyone off for Oliver then take off a centre back as they were already down to 10 men and looked toothless in attack. Instead we remained with 4 at the back and only had one recognised striker on the pitch and he was just coming back from an injury he’s had for 2 months! Poor decision in my opinion. A crap game, crap performance and overall if we play like that on Tuesday or next Saturday then we will be punished. Histon and Burton are far better opponents than Northwich and I just hope we begin to play like we did when we last played Burton in September.
