January Sales

After Saturday’s 4-1 win over St Albans in the FA Trophy, Graham Westley has spoken to the Comet about his plans for the upcoming January transfer window. After transfer listing Daryl McMahon and John Martin recently and bringing in 3 players on loan, the Boro boss still is keen to add to his squad next month as well as clear out some of what he calls “not his players” out.

“A lot of the boys I inherited aren’t my players. I’ve made it clear that some haven’t got futures here and it’s important we bed in.”

If I’m honest I’d rather we got rid of the manager instead of two of the better midfielders we have at this club. Under the right manager then McMahon and Martin are two of the best midfielders at this level. We saw what they can do under a manager who lets his players play football. Westley is looking for a different type of midfielder. Someone more workmanlike, which isn’t a bad thing, but will it deliver an attractive brand of football?

I think what happens in January depends a lot on what happens with Steve Morison. If I’m honest I can’t see him leaving in January. He hasn’t exactly lit up the division this season like George Boyd did before he left for Peterborough. I think a lot of that is also down to the manager. I think Moro plays better with an attacking midfielder playing off him, like Adam Miller or Boyd rather than as a 2 upfront. GW sticks to either a 4-4-2 or as attempted at yesterday a 4-3-3.

If Morison does leave though, then I expect a “big” name striker to come in to replace him. We may even spend some money, because I don’t think GW will settle for having just Boylan, Willock and Cole as his options up top. I assume Christie’s loan deal will be made permanent, although I still think he could do a job at BHW.
