The transfer merry-go-round at BHW

There remains confusion over Daryl McMahon’s future at the club. The official site claims that McMahon’s switch to Cambridge is still on and that his knee, which was apparently the reason he failed his medical, has now been given the all clear and he should move to the U’s on a free transfer soon. The Comet, however says that Cambridge have stalled on the deal, with the club not in a financial position to complete the signing. Gary Brabin is still very keen on adding McMahon to his squad, but needs to let players leave before signing others. They have already lost the services of Scott Rendell this week after his loan was cut short by Peterborough.

Other transfer listed midfielder, John Martin could be on his way soon too, with Grays being the most likely destination for the ex Leyton Orient man. With money being tight in the January transfer window, a player exchange deal has been mooted, but it’s 50-50 whether it happens or not.

“We’ve had enquiries about Johnny Martin, but we’re not rushing into anything. Any move has to be right for John and ourselves. We are currently talking to a Conference club about a player exchange – perhaps that may come to something, perhaps not”

The player exchange deal is an interesting one and both Grays defenders Jon Ashton and Jamie Stuart have already been linked to moves to BHW. It’s well known that Westley is a keen admirer of Ashton and a deal could be possible, but I assume Boro would have to pay for fee plus Martin to secure Ashton? Signing Ashton though would be a good bit of business and I think both him and Mark Roberts would make a good partnership in defence. It could also allow Westley to sell either Luke Oliver or Mark Albrighton, who must be two of the higher earners at the club and I’m sure would command a fair bit of interest if were made available for transfer?

It’s already been a busy week at Broadhall Way and nothing has really happened yet. I expect though that the McMahon deal will reach a conclusion eventually with the Irishman moving to Cambridge and John Martin to return to Grays, the team he joined Boro from 18 months ago. Westley wants another 2 players as well before the end of the window, so it could be about to get a bit busier.
