Moro off? Plus Boro miss out on midfielder

Rumours are circulating that Millwall are set to sign Steve Morison for a fee reported to be around £200,ooo. The Southwark News claims that the Lions are to launch a bid this weekend to land the 25 year old striker who joined Stevenage from Bishop’s Stortford back in August 2006. Morison has been hitting the back of the net consistently since his move across Hertfordshire and it is no surprise that a league side has taken a gamble by looking to add ‘Moro’ to their squad.

“It is a concern how many goals we have scored. We have to take responsibility through the team as a whole and in the second half of the season will definitely need to score more goals. I’m not in a frenzy to do anything in the next three weeks though. I continually assess the squad here and the market as I look for better players.” Kenny Jackett on strengthening his squad

Millwall are obviously in the market for a striker and Morison could be the one they turn to, but whether they will pay £200k straight up is doubtful. I think in the current climate that the deal will be done in installments and Boro will ask for some sort of sell-on clause, although I think League 1 is Morison’s limit, unlike George Boyd.

Staying with transfers and it sounds like Graham Westley has missed out on bringing Aldershot midfielder Lewis Chalmers to Broadhall Way in a loan deal. Chalmers, who impressed during the Shots’ title winning season last year has opted to join Steve Evans’ Crawley Town, rejecting moves to Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Boro. I don’t know whether Westley’s interest in Chalmers was before or after he signed Darren Murphy.

The interest in Chalmers obviously means that GW is still trying to strengthen the midfield which is far too crowded with players at the moment. Boro could play Mills, Bostwick, Vincenti, Martin, Murphy, Wilson and McMahon in the centre of the park at the moment, although 2 of the players listed there are available for transfer. In my opinion I don’t think another midfielder is needed. I would be happy with another striker coming in, especially if Morison goes and maybe a centre half. Other than that I think we are ok squad wise, but just need to find some consistency with a starting eleven. I’m confident going into the second half of the season and if GW buys and sells wisely in this window then the play-offs could still be a possibility.
