McMahon departs plus news on Trophy draw

Daryl McMahon finally left Stevenage Borough today joining rivals Cambridge United on a free transfer. The Irishman has signed a contract until the end of season with the option for the U’s to extend it if he impresses while at the Trade Recruitment Stadium. It brings his 2 year spell at Broadhall Way to an end, where he became a fans favourite for his passing and trickery. I’m disappointed he has left, especially in the way he has, but players who disagree with Westley don’t last long. If he has disrupted the harmony in the dressing room then of course he had to go, but I think a lot is being made out of rumours they’ve seen on the forum which isn’t true.

“I played every game I was fit for until November when the manager called me in and told me he was putting me on the list. He told me he saw things at the club going in a different direction, which is what happens when you get a new manager and he has new ideas. It was a bit of a surprise for me to be honest, but I’m coming to a big club and I’m looking forward to it.” McMahon on his move to Cambridge

McMahon signed for Mark Stimson’s Boro from Leyton Orient in January 2007. Since joining Boro, McMahon had a stop start time at Broadhall Way. He was not a regular in either of Stimson’s or Taylor’s teams, but when he has appeared has shown he is worth a chance. McMahon impressed Boro fans towards the end of Peter Taylor’s reign at the club when everyone seemed to be playing long ball, McMahon kept it simple and was Boro’s stand out performer at the back end of last season. Graham Westley convinced McMahon to extend his contract in the summer, a decision he must be regretting now. Best of luck to Daryl at Cambridge.

Elsewhere today, Boro were drawn at home against Burton Albion, if they overcome Farnborough at Cherrywood Road, in the 3rd round of the FA Trophy. Tomorrow’s game will be a difficult one for Boro and now they know the draw maybe the importance of the game will be lower? Will Westley place less significance on the game, knowing a difficult tie at home to Burton awaits? Will he want to concentrate on getting into the play-offs now both Oxford and Crawley have been deducted points today? Either way if you’re not travelling down to Hampshire to cheer on the Boro you can keep updated via FC Boro. Live updates, like this from a reserve game, will be available here from kick-off.
