How tonight’s results affect us

Matches were played across the Blue Square Premier tonight and here’s how they affect Boro’s position in the race for the play-offs. Table toppers Burton Albion visited crisis club Weymouth aiming to get back to winning ways after last Thursday night’s defeat away at Ebbsfleet United. They did that in style beating the South Coast side 5-0 at the Wessex Stadium with goals coming from Keith Gilroy, Shaun Harrad, Lee Morris (2) and a Gavin Hoyte own goal. Burton are 5 points clear of Cambridge, but have 2 games in hand. Cambridge themselves travelled up to the North West to face Barrow and thanks to two second half strikes from Chris Holroyd, took all 3 points. The U’s cement 2nd place in the table, 7 points clear of Histon, who have 4 games in hand on the U’s. Cambridge now look one of the teams certain to reach the play-offs, although they have played 2 or more games than their rivals.
The other team in Cambridge also recorded a win tonight. Histon demolished Grays 4-1 at Bridge Road. Funnily enough all the goals came in the first half. A hat-trick from Jamie Barker and a volley from Antonio Murray had given Histon a 4-0 lead before Andy Pugh gave the visitors a consolation. The win puts Histon 3 points clear of us, plus they have another game in hand still to play. They are now 3rd in the league. Kettering, who still have 3 games in hand on us also played tonight and won 1-0 against lowly Lewes. The goal coming from Frenchman Jean Paul Marna in the first half. They are now 6 points behind us in 10th position, but if they win all their games in hand they will go above us on 66 points. Wrexham also won tonight. They won away at Northwich with Matt Jansen and Nathan Fairfurst getting the goals. The win puts Wrexham 5 points below us with just the one game in hand. If we continue to do our job then we should stave off the Welsh threat.
Basically no results went for us tonight. We could of done with Histon and Kettering both dropping points at home, but considering the opposition they faced tonight I suppose we were praying more than anything. Wrexham winning doesn’t help, but as I said above as long as we do our job then Wrexham can’t get above us. I expect Cambridge to be there at the end of the season along with their neighbours who are also well placed. I think it is between us, Torquay, Kidderminster and Kettering for the last 2 positions and it could go down to the last few games before we know who will compete in May. Our run in, especially at home is massively important now!
