New unbeaten record as Boro seal return to Wembley

WembleyStevenage will be making a return to Wembley Stadium in May as they reached their second FA Trophy final in the last 3 seasons with a 4-2 aggregate victory over last season’s winners Ebbsfleet United. A last minute strike from Peter Vincenti confirmed that it would be the Hertfordshire side that meets York City after they beat Telford to also reach Wembley.

It was a tense afternoon in Kent, but Boro kept Fleet out and with the game petering out, Vincenti scored to make sure that it would be Graham Westley’s side who go through. The better side have definately made it to Wembley. Ebbsfleet lacked a cutting edge on Saturday and their defensive errors in the first half at Broadhall Way seem to cost them dear in defence of the Trophy they won last year.

Stevenage now have to make sure they switch their attention back to the league and try and forget about Wembley, which at this standard of football is a lot harder to do. Two years ago a very good Boro side struggled in the BSP, once they reached the Trophy final and what could of ended as a push for the play-offs ended in Boro finishing 8th. Westley must try and make sure that the team finishes the good job they have done so far of saving the season and getting into the play-offs. The run in is difficult. Big games against Histon, Oxford and Torquay await and if Boro want a play-off place, then they need some wins in big games, which has been their downfall in the past.

This team seems to have a backbone though and recently doesn’t look like losing, however bad they play. Yesterday was a good example. Not a great performance, but a good work ethic and team spirit got them past the finishing line and if they continue to do that then they will win things. It’s not always pretty, but at this level it isn’t always going to be. Westley and co seem to have found a winning formula with a team that has been relatively unchanged since January. Let’s hope it stays that way and that Boro bring back our Trophy in May!
