Here are the winners of the FC Boro 2008/2009 End of Season Awards…
Player of the Season
FC Boro’s player of the season is Mark Roberts. The ex Northwich man joined Stevenage in November, initially on loan before making the move permanent in January. Roberts excelled in a league game against Boro for Northwich and that performance impressed Westley enough to make a move. Roberts has sured up what was a weak defence and has chipped in with some vital goals at times this season.
Last season: Steve Morison
Most Improved Player
Over the course of the season this award has to go to Scott Laird. A player that was brought in by former manager Peter Taylor as a midfield player, but has been converted to an attacking full back. At the beginning of the season, defensively Laird didn’t seem to have it and goals were being scored against Boro at an alarming rate. Slowly though, the youngster has grown accostomed to his role and has been a consistent performer in Westley’s side.
Last season: Daryl McMahon
Worst Player of the Season
There’s a few that could win this award, but there can only be one winner and that goes to Gary Mills. The ex Rushden and Kettering midfielder was signed by Graham Westley last summer and has generally been poor throughout the season. He had a few good games towards the end of the campaign, but overall his performances have not been good enough. The stats will show that Boro have had more positive results without Mills in the side.
Last season: Junior Lewis
Best Newcomer
With a mass of new signings over the summer, then there is a lot to choose from for this award. After careful consideration I’ve decided that the best new signing this season has been the player of the season…Mark Roberts. Others such as Michael Bostwick and Chris Day were again close, but Roberts wins the award for being the most consistent player we’ve had in a long time. He came in and helped sure up a defence that was seriously lacking back in November.
Last season: John Martin
Disappointment of the Season
The biggest disappointment was being beaten in the play-offs by Cambridge, especially after a fantastic first leg which saw us win 3-1 at Broadhall Way. We were gutless in the 2nd leg, trying to defend in our own half for the whole game, time wasting and generally just settling for the lead we had. A real disappointing way to end the league season after such an effort in getting there in the first place.
Last season: Stimson walking out on Boro
Highlight of the Season
It would of been the play-off first leg if we had not been so spineless in the second leg. I suppose the highlight has to be winning the FA Trophy at Wembley. We cruised to another Wembley win in what looks like being Steve Morison’s last game for the club. A fantastic day out for everyone involved with the club. The win gives Boro a massive confidence boost going into next season.
Last season: Going top
Low Point of the Season
November was an awful month. Them 3 defeats against Histon, Burton and Wrexham and then the 0-0 draw against Grays led to many calling for Westley’s head. The attendances were down and generally the feeling around the club was at an all time low. The Grays game was the worse game I have ever seen anywhere. We were so inept it was unbelieveable. The first time I have ever walked out early at Broadhall Way. That month has to be the low point of the season.
Last season: Stimson’s move to Gillingham
Best Home Game
The Cambridge play-off game was special. The atmosphere made by both sides was electric and the game lived up to expectations. Even when down to 10 men, Stevenage never gave up and scored 3 second half goals to hand them the initative going into the return leg at the Abbey Stadium. Just a shame what happened in the game that followed.
Last season: Aldershot
Worst Home Game
Grays. As said above the worst game I have ever seen. Crap performance, ball in the air for the majority of the game, freezing conditions. It could of put anyone off going to Broadhall Way for a long time.
Last season: Northwich
Best Away trip
Most of the away trips I made this season was in the early stages of the season so there weren’t many positive results. Eastbourne was good for the day, but the result was poor, especially as it was a late winner. Woking was probably the best result I witnessed away from Broadhall Way. Overall though it has to be the first away visit to Cambridge, when we were mostly outplayed by the home side, but got a penalty in the last few minutes to salvage a point at the Abbey.
Last season: Histon
Worst Away trip
It could of been either Ebbsfleet or Wrexham, but I’ve decided to choose the Welsh side. Right at the beginning of the campaign and it couldn’t of been a worse start. Off the pitch, Wrexham is one of the most depressing places I’ve ever been to. The Welsh/Scouse people aren’t the greatest either. On the pitch we were a shambles, getting hammered 5-0 and having Steve Morison getting sent off. Not a good start.
Last season: Farsley
