Still unbeaten?

But that’s about it after another disappointing performance saw Stevenage leave Church Road, with just a point. Hayes & Yeading were the better side throughout and if they had taken their chances in the second half it could of been the home side celebrating their first 3 points in the Blue Square Premier.
Graham Westley brought Mitchell Cole and Lawrie Wilson back into the side replacing Stacy Long and the suspended Joel Byrom. It didn’t prove to be a wise choice as Boro were over run in midfield and right back Ronnie Henry was roasted all evening by an in form Dale Binns. The former Stevenage winger was certainly out to prove some people wrong and he did so with a superb Man of the Match performance. Hayes lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with midfielder Justin Cochrane pulling the strings. Binns and Allen-Page were threats all evening on the wings.
Boro started well in the first 5 minutes and could of gone ahead had Andy Drury’s free-kick landed the other side of the post. However, that was about it for Boro on the attack front. A few wasted corners was all the away team could threaten the Hayes defence with. The Blue Square South Play-Off winners were much more direct and positive and although they didn’t make many clear cut chances you felt that if anyone was going to go in ahead at half time it would be the hosts.
The second half began much like the first, but this time Boro took their chance and it was all thanks to a bit of brilliance from Andy Drury. He powered through the Hayes & Yeading defence before shooting left footed past Simon Overland. A superb solo goal from a player who was otherwise quiet tonight.
However, Stevenage didn’t build on this and their play was becoming quite disjointed. The long ball up to Griffin wasn’t working as the summer signing from Salisbury was beaten in the air most of the time and his touch wasn’t quite up to scratch. Hayes & Yeading’s plan was to counter any Boro attack and that they did with half hour to play. Binns worked his way past Henry before crossing to find right winger Danny Allen-Page to slot in the equaliser. Binns was superb, especially in the second half and he gave Henry a tough night. Boro were much more secure when GW replaced Henry with Stacy Long and switched Wilson to right back.
Hayes & Yeading had a few more chances to win the game. One chance in particular stood out when Chris Day made a superb double save to prevent Hayes’ debutant George Daly winning the game for the hosts. Day maybe should of done better with his first save, but the second stop was top class.
Boro pushed Vincenti and Odubade up with Boylan late on to try and secure the three points, but it wasn’t enough and Hayes & Yeading held on to limit Boro to just the 1 point from their trip to Middlesex. It’s not been an ideal start to the season for Graham Westley’s side and a win and good performance is now paramount at Barrow on Saturday to avoid being pushed too far behind the early pace setters at the top of the Blue Square Premier table.
