Vicarage Road is an all seated stadium situated in the centre of Watford. It has a 19,900 capacity and is currently being re-developed, which will eventually increase the capacity to 23,000. The stadium has been the home to Watford since the early 1920′s. Other than football, it is also home to Saracens Rugby Club.

Overall, Vicarage Road is a pretty neat and tidy stadium. It’s a bit on the small side, but a lot of that is down to the fact that the Main Stand is now very old. It’s a tatty looking structure that is now closed to supporters due to health and safety concerns. Half of the stand is an open terrace, but this too is also closed.

The rest of the ground however is of a good standard. On the opposite side to the Main Stand is the Rous Stand. This is a two tiered stand that has an unusual roof. There are also executive boxes that run along the top of the stand. It’s the best stand in the ground.

The two ends of the ground are identical structures. The Vicarage Road Stand was built in the 1992/93 season, while the Rookery End was completed the following season. The Rookery Stand is the end where the “core” Watford supporters congregate and support their team. This is the stand where I watched them play Newcastle in the Carling Cup back in the 2006/2007 season.

Getting to Watford

By car

Sat Nav reference: WD18 0ER

Watford isn’t that far away from Stevenage, just the other side of Hertfordshire. Leave Stevenage and get onto the A1(M) going southbound. Leave the A1(M) at junction 3 just after Hatfield Tunnel. Get in the right hand lane and take the 3rd exit onto the A414 going towards London Colney and St Albans.

Continue on the A414 going over a couple of roundabouts until you reach the Park Street roundabout. Take the 2nd exit onto the A405. Follow this road over a couple of roundabouts until you see signs for Garston (A412) and a Harvester on the right. Turn left onto St Albans Road (A412) and follow for about 3 miles. Turn left at Cassio Road and then right onto Ferraline Road. Vicarage Road is on the left a little further up this road.

By train

Getting a train to Watford from Stevenage is a bit pointless really. You have to go into London King’s Cross first, walk across to Euston and then get a Virgin or Midland train to Watford Junction. The nearest station to Vicarage Road is Watford High Street, although Watford Junction is the bigger station of the two and the more likely one you are to arrive at.

From Watford Junction station, walk up Clarendon Road until you reach the High Street. Turn onto Market Street when you get to the Natwest Bank and follow it up to Exchange Road. Turn right and then left onto Vicarage Road. The ground will be on the left after 5-10 minutes.
