Plainmoor is not the most picturesque ground in the football league. It’s a fairly small stadium with just a 6,000 capacity and has seen little change to it in recent years. The ground is located in the Plainmoor area of the town, hence the name, which is a fairly run down looking part of the English Riviera.
The best stand in the ground is the Yelverton Properties Family Stand. It is a modern looking stand with the directors box located within it. It is fully seated and holds approximately 1,500 supporters. The main stand is a dated wooden stand which goes across the half way line. It is seated, but looks ancient compared to the rest of the stadium.
Opposite the main stand is a tidy looking terrace which is known to home supporters as the “Popular Terrace”. Similar to ourselves and Burton, the more vocal home supporters congregate opposite the main stand. Again, it’s a fairly basic stand, but one that gives quite an atmosphere when the Gulls fans get going. Away supporters are located in the Sparkworld End. This is also a basic terraced stand and can hold up to 1,100 travelling supporters. This number is usually more than enough considering the ground is located in one of the deepest corners of the country.
When I visited Torquay, it was during the 2008/09 season. I went with my brother on the coach and it wasn’t the greatest trips I’ve ever been on. The weather was horrible all day and the football was just as bad. Boro were beat 3-0 on the day by a far better side. Hopefully our visit in the football league will be much better.
Getting to Torquay
By car
Sat Nav Reference: TQ1 3PS
As you will know, Torquay is one of the longer trips you will make as a Boro supporter. Head south on the A1(M) and then join the M25 going towards Heathrow Airport. Leave the M25 at junction 12 and merge onto the M3. Leave the M3 at junction 8 and join the A303 going towards Exeter. Continue onto the A30 going into Exeter before getting onto the southbound M5. The motorway becomes the A38. Continue on this road before bearing left onto the A380.
From here, follow this road into Torquay. As you go past a Garden Centre on the right, take the 1st exit at the following roundabout onto the A3022 (Riviera Way). Follow this road round until to reach some traffic lights, where a McDonalds will be on the opposite side of the road. Turn left here onto Hele Road where it will be signposted “Plainmoor” from here. Follow this road round until to turn right onto Westmill Road. Follow this road for a mile and the ground will be on the right.
By train
Torquay is served by trains from Exeter, from where you can connect to London Paddington. Torquay station is located in the centre of the town, near the front. It is about 2 miles away from Plainmoor so it would be best to get a bus or taxi. Other than that it is about a 40 minute walk from the centre.
