Altrincham’s Moss Lane is one of those typical old fashioned non-league grounds. The ground is located in the heart of Altrincham, a suburb south of Greater Manchester. The easiest route from Hertfordshire is via the M1, M6 route, but when we visited in April we decided to go up the M1, past Sheffield and across country on the A628 over the Pennines. We then picked up the M60 (Manchester Ring Road) to get to Altrincham. It was a fairly straight forward journey.

We arrived early and had a drink in the King George pub before having a walk into Altrincham itself. After a KFC, we then made our way back down to Moss Lane and visited the club’s bar before going into the ground.

The ground has a 6,000 capacity with 1,100 seats. The seats are all in the main stand which is old fashioned looking. It is quite a deep stand, but only goes across the half-way line. There is also a smaller “family” stand on the same side. The other 3 sides are all terraced stands. Depending on what end the home side are attacking depends where the majority of the Altrincham fans decide to stand.

Away fans are located at the Hale End, which is an open terrace, so be prepared to take an umbrella if the weather is not great. When we went in April, it was dry so the weather was not a problem. The stand is quite big so there is plenty of room for any travelling support. Although it was an old fashioned ground, Moss Lane actually has some character. I have never seen it full to capacity, but I can imagine it would drum up quite an atmosphere if it was full.

The game was a big one for Boro. The team went into it, knowing that a win would put Boro in pole position to win promotion to the football league. It was quite a poor game and one which Stevenage didn’t seem to get hold of. Eventually though they got the goal they needed thanks to Charlie Griffin and came away with a very valuable 3 points.
