Cambridge away was always one of the first fixtures I looked out for when they were announced in the summer, not because of the ground or the city, but because of the atmosphere the game always seemed to generate. Since the U’s were relegated in 2005, Boro developed a bit of a rivalry with Cambridge, so it was always a game I looked forward to.

The journey up to Cambridge is one of the more straight forward one’s that you’ll make as a Boro supporter. There are two ways you can go. If you live in the Bragbury End/Broadwater area then it may be better to go towards Ware and get on the A10 from there. I went another way, via the A1(M), coming off at junction 9 for the A505 and then getting onto the A10 at Royston. It only took me about 45 minutes so we had plenty of time to get parked before we walked to the ground.

Three sides of the ground are quite dated and probably haven’t been updated since the 70/80′s. The away end is the most modern stand in the stadium, housing 1,500 supporters. It gives excellent views of the pitch, but is quite a distance away from the pitch.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw with Mitchell Cole equalising for Boro from the spot late on. It made the walk back to the car very satisfying, knowing we had kept our run going and denied our rivals from closing the gap on leaders Burton Albion.

Getting to Cambridge

By car

Sat Nav Reference: CB5 8LN

Find your preferred route to Cambridge and then from junction 11 take the A1309 towards Trumpington. Follow the signs for Addenbrooke’s Hospital (A1134) and follow this road round for a couple of miles before you reach a roundabout with McDonalds on the opposite side of the road. Turn left at this roundabout onto Newmarket Road and the ground will be on the left about 500 yards down.

By train

Direct trains run from Stevenage to Cambridge on the First Capital Connect service. Cambridge station is located over 2 miles away from the Abbey Stadium, so it’ll probably be best to get a taxi or bus from the station to the ground. The best bus to catch is the C3 which takes about 10-15 minutes.
