Ben May had spells in the youth sides at Fulham and Southampton before joining Millwall’s academy. He progressed into the first team at The New Den making 79 appearances for the Lions in a 7 year spell at the club. May scored 14 goals in that time, 11 of which came in the 2005/2006 season in the Championship.

May didn’t really start featuring regularly for Millwall until 2005. Before then, the Gravesend born striker enjoyed spells on loan for the likes of Colchester United and Brentford. He didn’t really impress for Colchester, but seemed to hit some form for Brentford. He joined the club on a season long loan in the 2003/2004 season, making 41 appearances and scoring 7 goals.

The 2005/2006 season was May’s breakthrough season. He started to play more in the first team and scored 11 goals, which was a good return considering Millwall were relegated to League 1 that year. At the end of the season, May was linked with a move away from Millwall, but he stayed with the club, signing a new 2 year deal.

Unfortunately for May, his career began to take a turn for the worse after that season. He failed to re-produce his form the following season and ended up getting arrested along with pal Glen Johnson for attempting to steal B&Q taps! Soon after that, May was shipped off to Scunthorpe for an undisclosed fee. Again, May struggled to find his form and first team opportunities were limited due to the form of Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper. He made 40 appearances over 2 years, scoring only 3 goals. He was released in the summer of 2010.

After a few months without a club, May was given the opportunity to impress by Graham Westley and Stevenage. He played in a “behind closed doors” friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge, scoring in the process. A day later it was revealed that he had signed a deal until the end of the season with the League 2 outfit.
