Stevenage swooped for Irish striker Don Cowan on the last day of the summer transfer window of 2011. The move for Cowan came as a bit of a surprise as it looked like Graham Westley had finished his business for the summer. However, the former Shamrock player didn’t make his debut for the club until just before Christmas due to injury problems.

Cowan began his career at Shamrock Rovers, but only managed a handful of appearances before he moved to Longford Town, after a successful loan spell at the club earlier. Cowan enjoyed a regular run of games at Longford and started getting on the scoresheet.

As his form improved, Cowan began to get noticed and Championship side Millwall took him on trial. Cowan played for the Millwall reserve side, but did not do enough to earn himself a deal with Kenny Jackett’s side. Cowan returned to Ireland, but was soon on his way back to England when Stevenage took him on trial. This time, the trial was more successful and Cowan signed permanently for Stevenage, a month into the 2011/12 season.
