Roberts joined Boro from his home town club Northwich Victoria, who first team coach Dino Maamria had managed previously. Roberts was part of the backline which impressed in Northwich’s 1-1 draw at Broadhall Way in the 2008/2009 season. His performance in that game made up Graham Westley’s mind and the defender joined Stevenage initially on a loan deal which was then made permanent in January 2009.

He began his career at Crewe Alexandra, but after only making a handful of appearances along with some spells on loan at the likes of Southport, Chester and Halifax, he left to sign for Northwich. Roberts impressed at Victoria Stadium and earned himself a move back into the football league when he signed for Accrington Stanley. After making 34 appearances for Stanley, Roberts found himself back at Northwich after a falling out with manager John Coleman.

Roberts was back at home and was enjoying his football under Dino Maamria at Northwich when a move to Stevenage came about. Roberts impressed manager Graham Westley in the 1-1 draw between the two sides and soon enough he was joining the Hertfordshire club on loan. Roberts continued to impress and the deal was made permanent the following January.

After a superb start to his Boro career, the defender was appointed Captain of the club in May 2009, replacing the outgoing Steve Morison. Roberts has taken on the extra responsibility and become a great leader for this club. He skippered the team to the Conference title in his first full season and is now looking forward to leading Stevenage FC into the football league.
