Kirkby born Phil Edwards joined Stevenage in the summer of 2011 after rejecting a new contract at Accrington Stanley. He began his career at Wigan Athletic, but failed to make a single appearance in his time at the DW Stadium. During the 2004/2005 season, Edwards was sent out on loan to then Conference side Morecambe, where he made his senior debut against Northwich Victoria. That was to prove to be Edwards’ only game for the Shrimps though.
A year later saw Edwards move out on loan again, this time to Accrington Stanley. The move was far more productive and he went on to make 27 appearances as he helped Stanley win promotion to the Football League. A permanent switch was completed in the summer of 2006 and Edwards went on to make 200 appearances for the club in the league before deciding to leave for Stevenage in 2011.
Edwards joined Boro on a free transfer after his contract at Accrington expired on the 30th June 2011.
