Scott Laird was another one of Peter Taylor’s many signings during his spell as Boro manager. However, this one was actually not bad. Laird was signed from Plymouth Argyle and came in originally as a centre midfielder. Laird found breaking into the first team in that position difficult.  He also played a few games in left midfield, but found his position at left back when Graham Westley took over the following summer.

Stevenage had released Fred Murray and that gave Laird the opportunity to show what he is worth. He did that superbly and was arguably Boro’s most improved player over the course of the season. At the beginning of the 2008/2009 season he did show some naivety in that position, but he learnt from his mistakes and has gone from strength to strength.

He began the 2009/2010 season as Boro’s first choice left back and had built up a good relationship with the fans. He continued his good form and improved again winning the Supporters Player of the Season as Stevenage secured the Conference title. He signed a new two year contract in the summer of 2010.
